War & Peace Show 2010
Since my first trip to the War & Peace Show in 2000, I have tried to attend every other year, but that has not always happened. I always tried to include a side trip to make it more enjoyable for my wife. The W & P was quite an event even back then and several MVCC members were in attendance.

We decided to go back again in 2001 and Carl Thompson tagged along; after the event Carl spent several more weeks on the continent visiting various WW II sites. For some reason Rick Butler didn’t go that year; at least I don’t find him in any of my photos for 2001.

We went again in 2003 & 2005; Rick went us on both of those trips. At the 2003 show I had the pleasure of meeting the Author of the book “Churchill’s Foley” – Anthony Rogers; his book deals with the Leros and Aegean Battles, which the LRDG took part in. I also met up with Guy Harris & Roy Paterson who run the “Friends of Popski’s Private Army” organization. The 2005 show had the most LRDG/SAS vehicles that I have ever seen in one place at any one time (12).
Fast forward to 2007; we did a Western Mediterranean Cruise with my son and his family which left out of Barcelona, cruised along the Italian coast with stops along the way and returned to Barcelona, then we picked up a coach tour of Spain (which was a week long), when that was over we flew to England for the W & P Show. However the weather was against us this time; rain and more rain. The only MV’s that were moving, without difficulty, were the tracked ones. We still managed to have an excellent time in spite of the weather. I seem to recall several April events at Woodson Bridge that were wet and wild.
When I got back from the 2007 event I had the idea of putting together a MVCC tour for the 2008 W & P with some side trips to the Imperial War Museum, Bovington Tank Museum and several other WW II sites, while we were in country. But unfortunately I couldn’t get 30 people to commit, so that fell by the way side.
So I missed 2008 and although 2009 should have been the year that we would have normally gone, I just couldn’t justify it; as we were in the middle of a house remodel and couldn’t get away.
Now that brings up to 2010; Donna has always wanted to take River Cruise and I thought that we could put one together with the W & P show this year. The travel agent worked hard to find a cruise that either started before or after the W & P show; he finally found one that wasn’t sold out that started on July 11th out of Nuremberg and ended on the 18th. This gave us a few extra days in the UK before the W & P Show started. We cruised down the Main (pronounced mine), the Rhine and the Moselle, ending up in the German town of Trier. It was a very interesting trip, I would do it again but would prefer one the leaves out of Amsterdam and ends in Basel. But that would have to be planned earlier, maybe in 2012.
Now that brings us to the 2010 War & Peace Show. Photos of the show really do not do it justice. You can get great photos of individual vehicles but the magnitude of the size and number of vehicles there is mind boggling. Now I know that many of you have been to a lot of the MVPA Conventions and I have always been impressive with the ones I have attended. But to get a handle on the size of the W & P Show, let us say that the average MVPA Convention has three hundred registered vehicles. We know that someone always, at the last minute decides to show up with a vehicle but for argument sake lets stick with that number. Now multiply that number by 15. That is how many vehicles are registered to attend the W & P Show. Then spread 4500 vehicles over a hundred acres.
Then you need to look at the “Living History Groups”, from WW I to Vietnam.

At specific times through out the day (every day) armor could be seen going into the arena area for demonstrations.

After the tanks are done with their demo’s, the Allied and German re-enactors take to the field and portray some WW II battles. There is a running commentary by an announcer, explaining what is going on during this event. There were two battles this year; one was the Falaise Pocket the other was the Arnhem Battle, we won one and lost the other.

Now after all that you can’t forget to go around to all of the 100’s of stalls and booths to look for that rare accessory you needed to finish your vehicle or uniform. And you have to do all this in five days. I had the good fortune to meet and talk to a few notables. Gerald Haselden the son of Lt. Col. John Haselden who was killed in the Tobruk Raid on Sept. 13th 1942. And had a great talk with LRDG Trooper Jimmy Patch who was with Y Patrol as navigator on that same raid.
We saw “Dame Vera Lynn” as she was escorted through the music hall. And last but not least I met with General Montgomery.

One last thing, anyone want to go next year? I’m thinking of trying to get a tour together. Just because it didn’t work in 2007 doesn’t mean it won’t work in 2011.
